The CAT exam pattern has been changed, now cat exam is a online test, but the syllabus for CAT  is same as syllabus for previous CAT pattern.

There is no prescribed syllabus for CAT. It tests basically your managerial skills, team spirit, intelligentsia. Yet to help we give you some sketches of the syllabus

The CAT Test includes following sections.

1. Quantitative Ability
2. Data Interpretation
3. Data Sufficiency
4. Reading Comprehension
5. Logical Reasoning
6. Verbal Ability

Quantitative Ability: The purpose of quantitative ability section is for testing the candidates, their ability to solve problem. The quantitative section contains multiple choice questions based on mathematics. Topics include in this section are given below.

Quantitative / Mathematical Skills:

Geometry – Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional.
Ratios and Proportion- Arithmetic and fractional display problems on ratio and proportion.

Profit & Loss – Arithmetical Problem Solving based on cost price, discounts, selling price, percentage profit, percentage loss.
Averages – problems like finding number of girls in a class wherein the average and other relevant data are given etc.
Percentages – Conventional questions on percentages.
Partnerships.
Time-Speed-Distance – Leave you with a typical time-speed-distance questin: Two trains A and B start from two stations towards each other, speeds given, one of them have better speed than the other, also time they start are given, then calculate when or at what distance they meet.
Work and time – Questions like : A and B can do a work in ten days, A quits halfway, then in how many days can B do the same work?
Numbers – Complex Numbers, Fractions etc.
Numbers – Complex Numbers, Fractions etc.

Set theory and Venn Diagrams.
Instalments.
Clocks.
Probability.
Permutations & Combinations.
Vectors.
Expansions – Binomial Expansion.
Co-ordinate geometry.
Logarithm.
Calculus – Maxima & Minima.

Data Interpretation Section: Data are given in form of tables, charts, graphs. In this section it is tested that how candidates can interpret data.

Data Sufficiency Section: A statement is given with other statement, the candidates have to answer whether the given statement is enough to solve the problem or not.

Logical Reasoning: This section contains puzzles and logical questions.

Reading Comprehension and verbal ability section:
It tests your knowledge in English grammar and English language.

Includes:

Reasoning:
Critical reasoning, Assumption premise conclusion, visual reasoning, assertion and reasons, identifying valid inferences, statements and assumptions, identifying strong arguments and weak arguments, cause and effects, statements and conclusion, identifying true and false statement, linear arrangements, matrix arrangements, family tree problem, matrix arrangements, symbol based problems, sequencing, coding and decoding problem, number series.

English :
comprehension of passage, syllogism, verbal reasoning, contextual, analogies, antonyms, fill in the blanks, jumbled paragraphs, foreign language words used in English, sentence correction and completion, odd man out, idioms, one word substitution, same word’s different usage, errors in word choice, incorrect words, phrasal, proverb, punctuation etc.

Wish you all the best for CAT 2011 Examination

Who are eligible for CAT ?

For the Indian Institutes of Management and other equivalently optimum business schools, or better say, for the CAT as a whole, the minimum academic eligibility criterion for admission to the post graduate programmes in business management is at least a three-year Bachelor's degree or equivalent in any discipline with at least 50% (45% in case of Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe / Physically disabled) from a recognized university. The list of recognized universities, however, will be mentioned thoroughly in the CAT Application brochure.

Students appearing for the final year of the qualification examination and those who have completed degree requirement but are awaiting their respective results can also apply. Such students, having scored some hopeful percentile and after qualified in the group discussion and personal interview of their choicest business schools are provided admission subject to the condition that they pass the qualifying examination (the Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institute/university) with qualifying marks mentioned above. To your kind knowledge, the students can, in no case, round off their marks to qualify for the CAT. The CAT remains stubborn, so much so that if one scores 49.9%, (s)he cannot round it off by 0.1 % to make it 50%! Nevertheless, there is no age limit so far in the CAT. You can take the CAT as many numbers of times as you can. In case there are gap years between taking the CAT and any last degree you have attained, it is always recommended that you carry all those details in written, including proofs of employment if any, alon with you at the time of interview.

CAT Eligibility Criteria:

1. General Candidates: Atleast 50% or equivalent CGPA in graduation.

2. SC/ST Candidates: Atleast 45% or equivalent CGPA in graduation.

3. Final year students completing their graduation in year 2010.

Paper Pattern of CAT Exam

The questions are multiple choices type. For each incorrect answer you get negative marks. Every year, the IIMs change the question pattern to prevent predictability. You should therefore have a deeper understanding of concepts and their applications to succeed in the CAT. It is to be noted that you have to perform well in all the three sections of the CAT as the test evaluates the overall aptitude of the student.

Questions in CAT can be classified as follows

1. Verbal ability and reasoning – covers

i)             vocabulary based questions like "synonym - antonym" , fill in the blank with the appropriate word etc.
ii)           ii) English Usage / Grammar – Questions on Sentence correction (SC) also there is an alternative A set of 4 sentences were given and you had to find out how many out of the 4 sentences were gramatically correct
iii)          iii) Verbal Reasoning questions like rearranging sentences of a paragraph, Fact Inference Judgement questions etc.

2. Reading Comprehension

Covers passages on social or historical issue, scientific phenomenon, business related passages, topic related to entertainment, sports, leisure, etc.

3. Quantitative skills

Broadly categorized as Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry CAT typically tests a student's quantitative ability from over 25 topics. Topics like Number Systems and Number Theory , Percentages, Profit and Loss, Simple & Compound Interest , Speed, Time and Distance, Pipes and Cisterns, Races, Averages, Ratio, Proportion, Mixtures and Alligations, Linear and Quadratic Equation, Logarithm, Progressions - AP, GP, HP, Binomial Theorem, Inequalities, Permutation & Combination, Probability, Function, Set Theory, Geometry, Co ordinate Geometry, Trigonometry, Mensuration etc

4. Data Intrepretation section

In these questions data is presented either in the form of a table or a bar chart or a pie chart or a line graph or as a combination of one of these formats. Following each of these data presentations, there will be 4 to 6 questions. You are expected to answer the questions by interpreting the data given in the table or graph. Here is a sample data interpretation question. And Data Sufficiency (DS) - Every Data Sufficiency problem consists of a question followed by two statements. You have to decide NOT WHAT THE ANSWER IS, BUT WHETHER THE QUESTION CAN BE ANSWERED based on the information given in the two statements.

5. Analytical and Logical reasoning

Duration of CAT test

The duration of the test is 2 hours and 30 minutes including initial 15 minute tutorial. No breaks will be given during the test. The test consists of questions that evaluate a candidate’s quantitative, verbal, and logical & data interpretation abilities. Therefore, there are a total of three sections in the test. There will be about 60 questions in the test.

At the test venue, each candidate will be seated at a desk with a computer terminal and he/she will be provided with a scratch paper for calculations. After the test, candidate must leave the scratch paper at the desk. Rough work cannot be done on any other paper/sheet, as nothing will be allowed inside the testing room.
